Geospatial Information Authority of Japan had been equipping fixed VLBI stations since 1995. We started the regular experiment with fixed antennas from 1996. In 1998, Tsukuba 32-m VLBI station was completed, and our domestic VLBI network became 5 stations and 8 baselines. We named our domestic VLBI experiment "JADE", which means "JApanese Dynamic Earth observation by VLBI". Because the purpose of JADE is continuous observations of plate tectonics and other crustal movement. We hope to get brilliant results like a jade green. We also named our domestic VLBI network "GARNET", which means "GSI Advanced Radio telescope NETwork", named after a jewel too.
